unison hull city branch home join about us news contact us welcome to unison hull city welcome to unison, our trade union. we support and protect almost 1.3 million working people and offer a huge range of benefits to our members. we represent over 5,500 members in the hull city branch of unison and those employees engaged in delivering public services allied to the council, in addition we have members in further education colleges and the community and voluntary sector within the east riding of yorkshire. hull recycling workers strike for sick pay government money subsidising hull firm that doesn’t pay sick pay (19/04/18) emma hardy, the mp for hull west and hessle, has condemned a multinational company with a plant in hull for not providing sick pay to only some of its employees and called on the government to make it harder for employers to do this. speaking in business questions today, emma spoke about the strikes at the fcc environment plant in hull and slammed the spanish parent company for refusing to provide sick pay for all employees. the effect of this is that the company is being subsidised by the state, through the means of statutory sick pay, for not paying sick pay. fcc environment carries out public sector contracts and workers carry out work in a hazardous environment. emma’s intervention comes after two visits to the picket line in hull and ahead of a third strike that will start on the 1st may and last until the 14th may. wilmington strikers are fighting to share the same rights to paid sick leave as the managers and supervisors in the company they work for. at a recent meeting with fcc, unison argued that given the nature of the job, using heavy equipment to deal with contaminated waste in all weather conditions, a sick pay scheme is a ‘safety net’ for when people fall ill. unfortunately the attitude of fcc managers; who receive sick pay; was that their blue collar employees “should find their own safety net”. in the past workers suffering cancer were unable to receive sick pay and while receiving chemo and radiotherapy have had to attend work or lose pay. managers and supervisors with the same or similar illnesses would have been able to take time off on sick pay to recover. workers have previously stated that they would be prepared to forego their annual bonuses and other payments to ensure that the company is able to pay for sick pay for them. fcc workers in spain have also gone out on strike and lobbied the company’s head office in solidarity with workers in the uk. unison are looking into whether this is a breach of the equalities act (2010) which covers discrimination in relation to ‘protected characteristics’, and which specifically mentions illnesses such as cancer as a recognised disability from the point of diagnosis. commenting, emma said “it’s disgusting that fcc environment has decided that they will only pay sick pay to their managers and not all employees. sick pay is a basic right for employees and a basic duty for employers to pay- it is not something that you can pick and choose, it is part of the cost of employing somebody. it’s not good enough for a firm that is receiving public money in the form of government contracts to not pay sick pay because it would rather put that money towards profits for shareholders. i’m fully on the side of the workers in this dispute and have been down to the picket line twice already, they are doing everything they possibly can to come to a consensus with fcc and have even suggested they will give up their annual bonuses to secure this sick pay. it’s time for fcc to be reasonable and pay up and i’ll be doing everything i possibly can to make sure this happens.” solidarity from spain (19/04/18) hull recycling workers strike for sick pay - donations needed (03/04/18) branch appeals for donations to hardship fund as workers start two weeks on the picket line for sick pay from international company worth hundreds of millions . recycling workers working for fcc environment in hull have started two weeks of strike action for decent pay sick pay, and are asking for donations to their hardship fund. the 14-day strike, which started on 29 march, is the second round of action, following a week-long strike at the beginning of the month. the unison members are mounting a picket from 6am every day at the fcc wilmington waste transfer station in hull. their employer is a wholly-owned subsidiary of a spanish company that describes itself as “a worldwide leader in citizen services, specialised in environment, water and infrastructure”. it reported a 12.7% increase in earnings in the first quarter of 2017, totalling $188m globally. but unison hull city branch secretary adrian kennett says that, “despite the company’s significant profits, it refuses to to pay the workers who make them the profits decent pay and conditions.” the branch has been campaigning for a better sick scheme for a long time. last year, a member was diagnosed with cancer, but was denied sick pay. “we asked for this to be included in pay talks,” says mr kennett, but the company refused. at the same time, that company has not increased a pay offer of 2.5% increase, which most of our members were going to get anyway as part of the increase in the national minimum wage, which came into effect on 1 april. “this has left our members with no choice but to take industrial action,” says unison. the branch, supported by yorkshire and humberside region, is asking fellow unison branches to give generously to support the strikers, with cheques made payable to unison hull city and sent to: unison hull city branch town hall changers 39 alfred gelder street hull hu1 2ag latest news photos from the successful engage for change festival (26/06/18) the branch was proud to be a part of the engage for change festival, held on saturday june 23, hosted by the hull and district trades council. engage for change is all about encouraging participation and demonstrating bottom-up collective action. we aim to show that change can come through unity;
